The Kenwood TS-440S is an all solid state
general coverage receive ham radio transceiver and even to this day, it looks and operates like a modern
design. This one has AM, FM, USB, LSB, CW, FSK, and looks fairly modern (but not too modern and/or
miniaturized) and to those that are new to hobby, probably wouldn't be able to tell whether or not the Kenwood
TS-440 is more or less modern when compared next to new ham radios that are on the market today..
The crucial difference is you can get a high quality used ham radio like the Kenwood
TS-440S for about half of what new models (offering comparable features and performance) cost
today. Actually, many will argue that Kenwood's ham radios from the 1980s and 90s were the
best they've ever made! Full sized controls and performance or this design is often preferred by hams
than the newer, tiny controls and the excessive menu-driven controls and screens on today's models.
The Kenwood TS-440S transceiver also had a
notch, IF shift, audio processor for more punch, AGC fast and slow attack time switch, frequency lock, split
capability, receive attenuator, and many more features!
