The Yaesu FT-897D is one versatile ham radio! It covers all the HF bands, VHF, and the UHF (160-6 meters,
2 meters, and 70cm) band and it's meant to work in either a base, mobile, or even in a portable/field day
environment! Both a matching power supply and battery packs are available from Yaesu as extra
accessories! This amateur radio already comes with a power source tray built in, which means adding the
batteries for remote field day operation is a snap! It's also fairly lightweight and has a side handle for
easy carrying. I'm not much of a field day guy, but popping the battery packs on and talking outside on the
picnic table or in the park during a nice summer day would be a nice way to enjoy both the hobby and weather at the
same time. Who knows, it may get more into the ham radio hobby.
You would think a such a wide range
of frequency coverage would sacrifice receive specs vs. a HF only rig, however this is not the case at
all with the do it all well Yaesu FT-897D multiband transceiver. It not only has a very low
noise floor, it also has advanced DSP processing circuitry, great receiver sensitivity, and its
selectivity isn't too shabby either!
